Below is a list of over 270 keywords for landscape companies, which can be sorted and filtered for ease of use. Many of these keywords will show the “Local Pack” in the search engine results page (SERPs). See this screenshot for reference:

The picture above shows that we did a search with the keyword “patio builders” and that keyword will show the local pack (3 local businesses in a map) in the search results.

Most of the keywords in this list below will show the local pack if you search them in Google.

Below is a form to access and download the complete list of landscape keywords. Here is a list of ways that we may organize keywords.

1. SEMRush Export – this is the tool we used for our initial keyword research.
2. Grouped Keywords – we organize the keywords into groups
3. Service-Category Keywords – we use those groups and match them with service categories for another landscape design and architecture company.
4. Final Groups Keywords – we then group them to see the total average monthly search volume in the United States. This is how the Google Sheet is organized.

What To Do With These Keywords

Every time a human makes a search in a search engine they have a specific intention. Each one of these keywords should be looked at through that perspective.

If you want to get in front of the person searching for any one of these keywords or phrases, you’ve got to make sure that you have an experience (content) on your site that best matches the intention of the searcher.

Let’s go back to the “patio builders” keyword example above.

If someone is looking for a patio builder, Google needs to find a local provider that actually offers that as a service and that is trusted.

Let’s break that down:

1. Do you offer patio building?
2. Are you a trusted patio builder?

Number 1 is easy, but more often than not, landscapers fail to make it very clear and helpful to the searcher that they do indeed offer patio building (or any other service for that matter).

You need to make sure that you don’t simply have one page that lists all of your services and one of them on the list is patio building.

You need to make sure that you have an experience (likely a dedicated page) all about your patio building services.

This is the biggest failure we see landscapers make. They don’t have great, specific service pages. 

Because we know that the searcher’s intentions are to find a patio builder, Google doesn’t want to send that person to a website that doesn’t have much information about patios. They want to make sure you answer all of your potential customers’ frequently asked questions, that you have images that show your patios, that you provide proof that you actually build patios for other people nearby (reviews), and so on.

Secondly, you need to be trusted. Trust online is built in many ways, including reviews and backlinks (links from other websites to your site).

Check Your Keyword Visibility

Using an SEO tool like SEMRush, we can take this entire list of keywords and see what your positions are in Google for this entire list, in any city in the United States.

For example, we added all the keywords to a project in SEMRush, then entered “Bloomfield Hills, MI” as the location and put in a local landscape designer’s website to check their positions on landscaping keywords.

The screenshot below shows the company’s position in Google’s search engine results page for specific landscaping keywords if you searched each one of those terms individually in Bloomfield Hills, MI.

This business has nearly a 6% visibility for landscaping keywords. This means there are opportunities for improvement. While they are in the number one position for some terms, others are not even on page one.
