Today I’m talking about keywords with no search volume.
According to Google, 15% of annual searches have never been searched before.
That means there are hundreds of millions of search queries that won’t ever show up in any keyword research tool. They have “no volume” according to the tools.
You won’t find evidence that people are searching for “matching family pajamas with small dog”
But that doesn’t mean there won’t be results:
But that doesn’t mean there won’t be results:

Google will always show what they believe to be the most relevant URLs to match the intention behind your search query/keyword.
But sometimes there isn’t a page that matches the query with the most specificity.
Nowhere on the results page for that query do I see strong evidence that I will click through to a page with matching family pajamas specifically for a small dog.
That doesn’t mean it’s not available.
It just means no one has yet optimized an website experience for that search query.
Assume Your Business Has a 15% Blind Spot
Let’s assume that with the help of a keyword research tool and an incredibly talented SEO strategist you could collect ALL of the keywords that your target audience(s) search today.
Now, that’s REALLY hard to do, but let’s assume it is possible.
If you have that list, you can safely assume you won’t be capturing everything because keyword data is based on past search history, NOT THE FUTURE.
You would be missing the new queries that no one has ever searched before.
That means you’re always going to have blind spots in your SEO strategy.
But, that doesn’t mean you can’t get in front of those searchers by investigating your topics more thoroughly and developing a deeper sense of empathy for your customer’s search journey.
Pick one of your topics, like “matching family pajamas” and answer the:
- Who
- What
- Where
- When
- Why
Jot down those answers and consider your website’s content and experience for matching any potential variation.
