Local SEO Content You Need to Have on Your Website
Category: Search Engine Optimization | Tags: Local SEO, guide
(Example of content to put on your home page.)
How it Works
- On the home page of your site create a service and service area section.
- List all of your service areas in an accordion labeled “service areas”
- List all of the different services you provide in an accordion labeled “services”
- Add in a Google Map embed of your location for a little extra.
We suggest using an accordion for better user experience. If you have a lot of locations that you serve, it can be overwhelming to look at a large list like in the video example.
As a general rule of thumb, a better experience for the user is a better search experience as well.
Why it Works
This trick is simple and often overlooked. Your potential customers are searching for your service + their location and if you don’t have something as simple as all of the local municipalities you serve and all the services you offer on your home page, you are missing out.
Google is looking to serve up relevant content to people’s search terms. If your audiences’ search terms aren’t on the home page of your site (or anywhere on your site for that matter) you’re chances of showing up on the first page of Google is slim.
Now, like anything SEO-related, it depends.
Can you get a page to rank that isn’t mentioned on your home page? Absolutely. But, when it comes to local SEO for local service-based businesses, it’s helpful to have it on your home page.
How To Rank a Local Service-Based Business
We could write a novel about how to get your local service-based business to rank for your services. But, we’ll give you a simple 2-step process that we use at a high-level to build local authority and get local businesses to rank higher.
- Cover your topic really well.
Make sure you blog about your service and cover all of the related topics around it really well. Let’s say you offer hydroseeding services (like our customer landscaping SEO customer). Using a free tool like answerthepublic.com you can get ideas for what to write about to cover the topic of hydroseeding really well.
Now, make sure you organize your content well. In the image above, each one of those questions doesn’t have to be its own blog post. You should organize into categories that make sense. - Use Internal Linking
On any blog post that covers your service topic, you should make sure to mention that you offer that service and link back to a dedicated service page. In the example of hydroseeding, we make sure that every post related to the topic of hydroseeding has a link to the hydroseeding services page on the side of the blog post. This helps Google and the user understand that you aren’t just an authority on your service topic, but you do the work. If you’re following me, you’re realizing this blog is following the exact same strategy.Secondly, make sure that you follow a topic cluster model to organize your articles surrounding your service.
For example, we would create a “Hydroseeding 101” article as our pillar content. On the pillar, we briefly cover “DIY hydroseeding” but then later publish an article that goes into more detail on DIY hydroseeding. We would then add a link to our “Hydroseeding 101” article to the DIY hydroseeding article and vice versa. Do this where it makes the most sense within the content.
Is there more I can do to get my local site to rank?
There always is. But, having great content about your services is a must and far too often overlooked. Start with your content and then you can start worrying about backlinks.
