Sure, some marketers can fly by the seat of their pants and come up with solid content in an hour or less without using a template. However, that’s a talent usually reserved for the Don Drapers of the content world.

In case you aren’t Don Draper, here’s a primer on what content templates are and what they need.

What Your Content Templates Need

At a minimum, your template should have:

• Keywords you’re targeting
• Any intent information behind those keywords
• Detailed notes about the target audience
• The point in the awareness journey that the intended reader is in
• Notes about the call-to-action (CTA) you need them to see
• Metadata such as the meta description and title
• Links and references to pages that are ranking for your target keyword
• Notes about the search intent behind the target keyword

And, most importantly:

• An outline of all the points you’re trying to cover with your content

Where AI Can Help (Kind of)

AI programs can take you part of the way in the development process. Namely, various AI tools can help with:

• Identifying possible keywords
• Uncovering under-explored aspects of the subject matter
• Giving you a way to explain the subject to a layperson who might not know as much about it
• Showing you the current results in AI overviews and other tools that get your information in front of your target audience

However, there’s a balance. AI can’t completely replace the human touches involved in understanding search intent. That’s where it helps to use your expertise or your team’s expertise.
