Today, I want to show you how I’m using AI to create and review the content I publish on websites (steal my prompts below).

When I add or edit pages on a website, I’m doing it (primarily) to attract people from search engines.

I’m walking a fine line because I want the pages to rank in search engines, but I’m producing content for searchers, not the search engines. Here’s how:

I use EVIDENCE:

• Are people searching for this (Semrush for keyword research)
• I search and analyze the results in Google and ask, “do I belong here?”

Once I’ve confirmed it’s worth it to pursue a set of keywords (call that a “topic”), I use EMPATHY, seeking to become the searcher and understand what they could possibly need:

• Where are they on their journey?
• What is the least they could know and the most they could know?
• What could they need next?

These questions help to understand intent.

After creating a first draft of your empathy-driven content, AI can help you review your content to make sure it is doing a decent job. Here are several prompts I’ve been using to sharpen my content output:

Using the above information, can you check [DOCUMENT URL OR WEB PAGE URL] and tell me what I’m missing? Be extremely critical and don’t hold anything back. I want to make sure I’m truly creating a page that delivers on all the potential needs and intentions of the searcher.

Some Additional Notes on These Prompts

• These prompts may need a little re-working for you to get the output you’re looking for. AI is highly personalized and often needs a lot of parameters to produce a strong output.
• Don’t let AI replace your intuition and developed sense of empathy. Ask a colleague, or better yet, your target audience if you’ve got a great page.
• Responses may vary with AI. I’ve seen some great insights, and then I’ve seen some real hallucinations where it clearly doesn’t do a great job of checking my work or the competition’s. It’s not perfect, but neither are humans. Just keep this in mind.
