What are Content Templates?
Think of an SEO Content Template as a guide for your writer. It tells them how to fulfill search intent with the ultimate goal of driving more organic traffic to your website.
After identifying potentially valuable topics and performing keyword research, SEO Strategists create Content Templates for a topic. These templates will provide a basic structure and flow for the desired content with an outline, questions, and keywords to include.
When Should You use Content Templates?
Content Templates should be used to write or re-write content on your website to improve your SEO. Start from the searcher’s point of view, and aim to answer questions typed into search. This way, you will be able to better fulfill searcher intent.
If you want to improve your website’s visibility in organic search results, consider using an SEO Template for your next piece of content.
Why is Using a Content Template Effective?
Using an SEO template for landing pages and blog posts can help your content writer organize and optimize your content for search engines. The most effective content templates include a list of keywords and questions to provide the writer with plenty of direction.
Not only that, but the most effective templates will allow the writer to naturally incorporate keywords and fulfill search intent in the content. Rather than listing related keywords in the content piece—also known as keyword stuffing—your writer should be able to answer questions that your target audience asks Google. This strategy will help your content rank higher in organic search.
What Should Be Included in a Content Template?
Not all templates are created equal. Here at Avalanche Creative, our SEO Strategists design our templates with some very important factors in mind to help give writers as much direction as possible. Here is a look into the process we use for creating content templates.
You can also take a step-by-step look at our process for creating content templates in Google Docs.
Define the Goal of the Content
Begin by asking yourself, “What is the main question that my target audience has that I want to answer in this piece?” Type this question into Google to see what is ranking for this query. This will give you an idea of how in-depth your information should be.
From there, you can start performing keyword research. Use a keyword research tool like SEMrush to enter your main keyword and find other related keywords. List these target keywords in your content template.
Define the Audience of the Content
Don’t forget to keep in mind whose eyes you want this content in front of! Think about your audience and what kinds of questions they would ask about this topic.
If you’re feeling stuck, type your main question into Google and scroll to the “People also ask” section.
Use these questions to develop a basic outline of your content, complete with heading tags that include keywords and any other supporting information that helps fully answer the question.
Lastly, don’t forget to add your desired meta title and meta description to your content template, as this is what typically shows in Google search results!
Define Where the Content Lives on Your Website
Another directive to give to your writer is where this piece of content will be located within your website’s structure. Your content template should indicate whether this piece is meant to be a blog post, service page, or another important landing page of your website.
This is important because after putting all this work and care into your content, you will want to make sure that website visitors can navigate to view it! The more eyeballs you have on your content, the better.
What’s Next?
Your next step is to pass your content template to your writer so they can work their magic!
Get in the habit of creating content on a regular basis by planning your topics 90 days in advance if possible. Here at Avalanche, we deliver a set number of content templates to writers each month. Writers have one week to write the content so that we can get approval from clients as needed and publish content consistently.
