Hi friend,
Lance from Avalanche here. Today I’m talking about how to become a (10-year) overnight marketing success.
Just over 10 years ago I started building what would become Avalanche Creative.
Here’s my story plus key takeaways. Hoping you’ll feel inspired and gain some actionable insights.
1. Start a startup. Fail. But have fun building the website for it.
2. Build a website for selling people websites.
3. Be cheap and poor and realize you can’t pay to get people to your website.
4. Google “SEO” and start doing random things the internet tells you to do.
5. Wait.
6. Probably wait some more.
7. Start getting traffic and your very first lead/sale from SEO.
8. Tell your wife “this is it” and quit your day job.
9. Start another website and get it to rank for a few things, but make no money.
10. Struggle a while. Realize that one victory doesn’t mean many come easy.
11. Keep trying and get more results… eventually.
12. Sell a website for $10k based on the value of SEO.
13. Realize you might be at least okay at this.
14. Start offering SEO as your main service.
15. Struggle for a while to find your niche even within the niche of SEO.
16. Convince your wife to join and lead operations.
17. Grow the business to 14 people in 4 years after 5 years of just me.
18. Keep dealing with imposter syndrome. Keep learning. It’s not over.
Key takeaways after breaking down 10 years into 18-one-liners:
- Never give up.
- Learn faster by doing.
- Be patient but not complacent.
- Get comfortable being uncomfortable.
- Seek help from others who have been there and done that.
