Implicit and Explicit Searches
Great local SEO services will target both implicit and explicit searches to find every opportunity to get their site in front of the searcher.
An explicit location search is when someone refers to a location in their keyword. Many searchers will put specific cities or regions into their searches, such as “therapists in grand rapids” or “ltl trucking michigan.” This present a great opportunity to create SEO content that targets these specific search terms.
Adding “near me” to the end of a search is another popular type of explicit request, as in “commercial construction near me” or “landscapers near me.” In that case, Google will determine the searcher’s location and show results in their area. While these search terms aren’t as specific as “landscapers in grand rapids” they can typically be served with a similar type of strategy.
An implicit search occurs when a keyword doesn’t refer to a geographic location, but Google still interprets that physical locations what the searcher is looking for. For example, if I search “haircut,” Google shows me a lot of images and links to Pinterest profiles. But if I search “hair salon,” Google guesses that I’m not looking for images, but a list of good hair salons near my location. It also places the map pack at the top of the page.
How to Build Local Trust and Relevance
In order to rank for the keywords your customers are using to search, you need to have local, service-based landing pages that match the intention of the searcher and their desired experience.
For example, if you own a pest control company, you can’t simply have one page that lists all the pests you take care of. You need a mole specific page and one dedicated to each of the service areas. That way, you’re offering the searcher an experience on your website that matches their needs exactly. Plus, this gives you the best shot at ranking high for valuable keywords.
So if you want to rank for “mole control grand rapids” or any of the millions of SERVICE + LOCATION search queries, then you need to have a page that delivers on that need better than anyone else.
On each page, you need to make sure to include:
- Your phone number and contact form present in a way that stands out and is easy to interact with.
- Titles that make it clear that you offer services that will solve the searcher’s problem in the location they searched.
- A clear explanation of the process of engaging with your services and what to expect.
- Reviews and social proof that you work with people or brands in that service area.
- Frequently asked questions (FAQs) that people have about your service.
- Additional resources such as posts related to the topic that are informational and educational.
