Today I’m talking about keyword research tips that will help you identify more opportunities to turn search engine real estate into revenue.
In order to develop an SEO and content strategy that produces meaningful results for your business, you have to do careful and critical keyword research.
- Keywords become content.
- Content becomes conversions.
- Conversions become sales.
So if you don’t find good keywords, your content can suffer and therefore the number of conversions (leads, sales, etc.) can suffer.
Without a holistic, comprehensive keyword research process, you’re leaving revenue opportunities on the table.
Here are three of my favorite tips for better keyword research:
Tip #1 – Head Keywords
Use one or two-word keywords when you start doing keyword research with a tool like Semrush. You’ll get a good idea of the variety of keywords that exist within that topic and you’ll start to find new terms, that could be valuable, that you hadn’t thought of.
Tip #2 – SERP Features
Use advanced filters in the keyword magic tool of Semrush to see which keywords show search engine results page features such as the Google Map Pack (indicating that Google will show local results).
Tip #3 – Competitor Websites
Go to the organic research tool and type in a competitor’s name. Browse their ranking keywords and add them to a list if they are relevant. Use the same filters mentioned in #2 to find the juiciest keywords and filter by head keywords.
Once you’ve developed an exhaustive list of keywords you believe your audience might search for, you need to group and map those keywords to content on your site.
If you miss out on important keywords/topics then you’re never going to create content that attracts new, valuable website visitors.
